filling of the vacancy in the post of Deputy Harbour
Master. As stated in my confidential despatch of 20th
May, 1939, I have decided to recommend for this post
a fixed salary of £1200 plus residential allowance of
£70.0.0. on the scale suggested by you. I have
therefore to request that the particulars of office
may be amended accordingly and that the selection of an
officer to fill that vacancy may now proceed.
2.
I take this opportunity of expressing the
hope that it may be possible to make this appointment
at any early date as the Harbour Department is working
under great difficulties as the result of the
simultaneous occurrence of vacancies in the posts of
Deputy Harbour Laster and Assistant Harbour Master.
3.
I have also to refer to the situation which
will arise in the Marine Survey branch of the Harbour
Department if Commander T.C. Stiff is appointed to either
of these vacant posts, as suggested in my confidential (2) despatch of 3rd April, 1939, There will then be a
vacancy for a Ship Surveyor and I have to request that
if Commander Stiff's transfer to an administrative post
